Introduction to Cervical spondylosis:

Cervical spondylosis is a common condition that affects the cervical spine, it is the part of the spine located in the neck. Cervical spondylosis is caused by a tear in the cervical vertebrae and the intervertebral discs that cushion them. As the age increases, the disc in your spine loses moisture, which causes cervical spondylosis symptoms.

Ayurveda treatment is planned depending upon the severity, to balance the vitiated vata which includes dietary changes, lifestyle changes, Panchakarma therapies, and yoga. What are the Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis?

Neck Pain:

  • Chronic pain in the neck is a common symptom of cervical spondylosis. The pain may be dull or sharp and may radiate to the shoulders and arms.

Shoulder Pain:

  • Pain and discomfort may extend from the neck to the shoulders, particularly the upper part.

Headaches:

  • Cervical spondylosis can contribute to tension headaches or headaches originating from the neck.

Stiff Neck:

  • Reduced range of motion in the neck, often accompanied by stiffness, is a common complaint.

In Ayurveda, Cervical spondylosis is called “Greeva sthamba”, caused due to vitiation of vata dosha, affecting the joints of the neck.

Role of Diet in Cervical Spondylosis:

  • For Any imbalance in an individual’s health, the first important thing is to modify diet, which has to be corrected and taken in a balanced way.
  • The diet should be rich in fiber content like seasonal fruits and vegetables, water, and red rice to avoid constipation which prevents straining.
  • Intake of methi seeds and sesame seeds in the diet.
  • Avoid intake of fried, packed, coffee, tea, beverages, and fridge cold items intake.

Role of Yoga to Treat Cervical Spondylosis:

Start to practice daily yoga with sukshma vyayama (warm-up exercise), yoga helps to balance vata dosha and blood circulation, strengthening the muscles of the neck.

Practicing Anuloma viloma pranayama and meditation to keep oneself calm and composed physically and mentally. So, yoga is a beneficial therapy for individuals with cervical spondylosis treatment as it helps to stretch and strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles, improve posture, and reduce stress.
