Ayurvedic Home Remedies to Increase Hemoglobin, Natural Treatment

Introduction to Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin is the iron-containing oxygen-carrying protein found in red blood cells. Hemoglobin in the blood carries oxygen from the respiratory system to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin is a bidirectional respiratory transporter that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and facilitates the return transport of carbon dioxide.

Ayurveda Increase Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin has two parts- the heme and the globin. The heme contains iron and transports oxygen from the lungs to the tissues as well as takes carbon dioxide from tissues back to the lungs. Globin, a complex macromolecule is a protein that helps to keep the hemoglobin liquefied. It is important to maintain the hemoglobin level in the body as if your hemoglobin is too low, you may not be able to supply the other cells in your body with the oxygen they need to survive resulting in many health issues. To lead a normal healthy life, it’s very important to have a balanced diet to maintain and increase hemoglobin level.

Dietary Changes:

  • Iron-rich foods: Include iron-rich foods in your diet such as leafy greens (spinach, kale), lentils, beans, tofu, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fruits like pomegranate and dates.
  • Herbs: Ayurveda recommends certain herbs known for their iron content or blood-building properties, such as Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera).
  • Spices: Incorporate spices like cumin, coriander, and fenugreek, which are believed to aid in digestion and help in better absorption of nutrients including iron.

Herbal Supplements:

  • Triphala: This combination of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki) is known for its detoxifying properties and can help in improving digestion and nutrient absorption.
  • Lohasava and Punarnavasava: These are Ayurvedic herbal formulations that are often prescribed to improve hemoglobin levels.

Ayurvedic Formulations:

  • Navayas Lauh: It's a classical Ayurvedic medicine known for its blood-building properties. It contains ingredients like Lauha Bhasma (iron calx), Triphala, and Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia).
  • Punarnava Mandura: Another Ayurvedic preparation that contains Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) and Mandura Bhasma (iron oxide), which are believed to improve hemoglobin levels.

Ayurvedic Treatment & Home Remedies for Hemoglobin

  • Pomegranate Juice: Pomegranate is rich in iron and vitamin C, both of which are beneficial for increasing hemoglobin levels. Drink fresh pomegranate juice regularly.
  • Beetroot Juice: Beetroot is another excellent source of iron and folate. Drinking beetroot juice regularly may help boost hemoglobin levels.
  • Nettle Tea: Nettle-leaf tea is believed to be beneficial for increasing hemoglobin levels due to its iron content. Steep nettle leaves in hot water to make tea and drink it regularly.
  • Sesame Seeds and Jaggery: Roast sesame seeds and mix them with jaggery to make a nutritious snack. Sesame seeds are rich in iron and jaggery provides other essential nutrients.
  • Fenugreek Seeds: Soak fenugreek seeds overnight and consume them the next morning on an empty stomach. Fenugreek seeds are believed to have blood-building properties.

Foods to Improve Hemoglobin:

  • A balanced diet that includes food rich in iron, folic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin B12 is very important for hemoglobin balance and also to absorb the nutrients present in the diet.
  • Green leafy vegetables are a rich source of iron, and nutrients, low in fat, rich in vitamins A, C, E, K, and good dietary fiber, potassium, sodium, and magnesium.
  • Fruits especially when they are seasonal play a very important role in high hemoglobin levels. Fruits like pomegranates, apples, bananas, apricots, melons, and mulberries must be consumed when they are available fresh and seasonal.
  • Dry fruits like walnuts, Almonds, dates, prunes, raisins, and figs are soaked overnight, and having it increases hemoglobin levels by balancing all the vitamins and minerals.
  • Protein-rich foods like red meat, fish, egg, and chicken also balance hemoglobin levels and increase food in the body.
  • Seasonal vegetables like spinach, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, beans, capsicum, and drumstick leaves are rich sources of iron and vitamin C.

Always having a balanced nutritious diet is very important also, avoid a few foods that hamper the absorption of iron from the food that an individual is consuming like tea, coffee, beverages, too many dairy products, and alcohol.

Causes of Hemoglobin

  • Blood Loss: Acute or chronic blood loss from sources such as gastrointestinal bleeding, menstruation (in women), surgery, or trauma can result in decreased hemoglobin levels.
  • Bone Marrow Disorders: Conditions affecting the bone marrow, where red blood cells are produced, can result in decreased hemoglobin levels. These include aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and leukemia.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the body's demand for iron increases to support the growing fetus, which can lead to iron deficiency anemia if dietary intake is insufficient.
