Introduction to Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are hard stone-like tiny crystals made up of minerals and salts on the interior surface of the kidney, where urine leaves the kidney tissue and enters the urinary tract system.
Kidney stones are also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, and urolithiasis.
Urine has various wastes dissolved in it, when there is too much waste in too little liquid, crystal begins to form. The stone-forming chemical is calcium oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate.

What are the causes of Kidney Stones?
- Insufficient Intake of Water: Inadequate hydration can lead to concentrated urine, increasing the risk of stone formation.
- Diet Rich in Protein: Diets high in animal proteins, such as red meat and certain types of fish, may contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
- Body Weight: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of kidney stones, possibly due to its impact on urinary factors.
- Medical Conditions: Hypercalciuria: Elevated calcium levels in the urine.
- Obesity: Excess body weight can contribute to metabolic changes that increase stone risk.
- Kidney cysts: Fluid-filled sacs on the kidneys may contribute to stone formation.
- Parathyroid disease: Overactive parathyroid glands can lead to increased calcium levels in the urine.
- Chronic diarrhea: Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can promote stone formation.
- Urinary Tract Blockage: Conditions that obstruct the normal flow of urine, such as urinary tract infections or structural abnormalities, can contribute to stone formation.
The stone may stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract into the ureter. Sometimes tiny stones move out of the body in the urine without causing too much pain.
But stones that don’t move may cause a backup of urine in the kidney, ureter, bladder, or urethra, which causes severe pain.
Symptoms of Kidney Stones:
- Severe Pain in the Lower Back: Intense, sharp pain on one or both sides of the lower back or abdomen is a hallmark symptom. The pain may radiate to the groin or lower abdomen.
- Vague or Persistent Abdominal Pain: Some individuals may experience more generalized, vague abdominal pain or stomach ache that persists over time.
- Blood in the Urine (Hematuria): Hematuria, the presence of blood in the urine, may result in pink, red, or brown-colored urine.
- Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea and vomiting can occur due to the severe pain and discomfort associated with kidney stones.
- Fever and Chills: In some cases, the presence of an infection along with kidney stones may lead to fever and chills.
- Cloudy or Foul-Smelling Urine: Kidney stones can sometimes cause changes in urine color, clarity, or odor. Cloudy or foul-smelling urine may be a sign of an associated infection.
