Types of fatty liver disease

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD)

Causes of fatty liver disease

  • 1. Unhealthy diet and obesity – A diet high in processed foods, unhealthy fats, and added sugars can lead to fat accumulation in the liver
  • 2. Diabetes and insulin resistance – insulin resistance increases fat storage in the liver, that less to inflammation and damage over time. Thus, diabetes and insulin resistance have a higher chance of developing fatty liver disease.
  • 3. High cholesterol – Elevated cholesterol levels help to build fat in the liver. Metabolic imbalance can lead to various metabolic diseases, including fatty liver.
  • 4. Excessive alcohol consumption – Alcohol is the major toxin that the liver processes. Heavy drinking overloads the liver and leads to fat accumulation, inflammation and scarring. 

Symptoms of fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease is a silent condition, with no symptoms in its early stages. However, some may experience 

  • Fatigue and weakness 
  • Mild abdominal discomfort 
  • Unexplained weight loss 
  • Loss of appetite 
  • Dark urine 
  • Jaundice 

Stages of fatty liver disease 

  • 1. Grade 1 fatty liver disease – Excess fat accumulates in the liver but does not cause significant inflammation or damage.
  • 2. Grade 2 Alcoholic Hepatitis – inflammation occurs, leading to liver damage 
  • 3. Fibrosis – Persistent inflammation causes scarring of liver tissues 
  • 4. Cirrhosis – Extensive scarring leads to liver failure, increasing the risk of liver cancer.
